SHOPPING SHOCKERS: Kravco, which has 10 malls on the East Coast, is the nation's first major mall chain to install automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in all of its shopping centers. As many as 50 million people visit the chain's malls, including people who walk the malls for exercise before stores open in the morning. Emergency officials estimate that 100,000 lives could be saved each year if defibrillators were more widely available. The AEDs can be opearted by people with little or no medical training. Defibrillation, giving a corrective shock to a quivering heart, is the only way to save some victims of cardiac arrest who suffer a deadly short-circuit in the heart. The AEDs in the Kravco Malls are mounted in cases with an alarm that sounds when the door is opened. The setup is similar to those being installed in airports across the nation. The mall devices have a bonus: OXYGEN, key to reviving a heart attack victim.
